The GROW Coaching Model is a simple way to structure coaching and development conversations. It was popularised by Sir John Whitmore in the 1980s and is still widely used. GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options, Will.
Goal – Start by setting a clear aim. What do you want to achieve?
Reality – Look at the current situation honestly. What is happening now?
Options – Explore possible ways forward. What choices are open?
Will – Agree actions and commit to follow through. What will you do, and when?
The strength of the model is that it shifts the focus from telling people what to do, to helping them think through their own answers. This creates ownership and motivation.
Example:
A manager asks a team member what goal they want to hit in sales this quarter. They then explore current performance, discuss new approaches, and agree a plan to try one idea within two weeks. The responsibility to act stays with the team member, not the manager.
Takeaway:
The GROW Coaching Model makes leadership conversations structured, supportive, and practical. It works in one-to-one sessions, team discussions, or even quick check-ins.
